Three Easy Steps To Improving Your Quality of Life

When you change your thinking and your mindset and bring forth awareness, you set yourself free in ways you didn’t know were possible! When you attach to the negative and allow that to fester, you tear apart your ability to see the good, to feel grateful and to appreciate what is.

I don’t know if you are aware of the power of gratitude, but it’s super seriously good for your health and mindset!

Gratitude allows you to feel full in life, as if you are not missing anything. This doesn’t mean we can’t strive for certain goals, possessions or whatever you’d like, it means, that you hold an attitude of already having enough, so the idea that you need more actually disappears and your goals or wants become more valued and specific.

Try these 3 steps daily and see how your life improves!

1. Gratitude Journal for 5 minutes daily. Write down what was funny, warmth, clean car, good sex, great friend or conversation or tasty food!  Anything! Feel Full from heart center as you write. Smile.

2.  When you are out and about, feel grateful for nature as you look around. Realize that the trees are oxygenating, the bees are pollenating (that’s why you want to keep your dandelions for bee’s first food after winter), blue sky, gray sky, rain, snow, wind, whatever you have, develop a sense of gratitude that is part of the planet that you live on and it’s a self sustaining eco-system if you let it be.

3. Begin to change your lingo when you are speaking about others or yourself. Begin to take notice of all the good and feel a sense of appreciation for someone elses situation, and then embrace your own situation.  Feel the love and gratitude that you are you and what an amazing experience you get to have in this life. Let the gratitude for experience wash over you.

Well, that’s it for now!
Practice these steps and watch how your interaction in life improves!

Much Love, and In Gratitude,

Chemical Mattress Topper Update! It’s a Good One!

-Hi!  It’s Julie Here!

This is a quick update to confirm the power of using your intuition about what is making you feel sick.  As you remember from a previous newsletter, I was feeling like I had been poisoned by the toxic chemicals that came with the mattress topper that I had on my bed for a few months.  Incase you missed it, click here for the story.

This was no joke! Between the fatigue and my lung issues I thought for sure I was going to have to face some awful outcome, because I actually felt that bad.  I chose to risk the radiation from an x-ray and get my lungs checked out. My brain went from wondering if I had pneumonia to emphysema, lung cancer to mold spores to holes in my lungs and more.  Yes, even health coaches can get nutty with their thinking from time to time!  Fortunately, my x-ray came back clear as could be and needless to say, relief came over my body like a wave and provided me with some peace of mind.

The whole time I owned this mattress topper, my little voice kept whispering, this is why you feel this way and sure enough, about a month has gone by since I’ve gotten rid of it and I am slowly but surely beginning to feel like my normal self.  Whew! Thank goodness I checked in, clued in and listened to what that whisper was telling me, “ditch your mattress topper, ditch your mattress topper.”  So, I’ve been walking regularly, gaining lung capacity back, I don’t feel like I have a brick on my chest and I don’t feel fatigued or as if my lungs are burning.

In addition, when I returned this topper, the clerk said, “yeah, we see this with most of the toppers. They are returned and people do not buy new ones.”  Interesting!

Lesson:  Always start with your environment, including foods, and see what is new (within 6 mos), what has changed and check in with your little voice.  It’s telling you the answers!

Much Love and Gratitude,

Julie

I Think My First Mattress Topper Is Making Me Sick!

I was at my parents house in October of 2015 and slept in the guest bedroom on a dreamy mattress that allowed me to sleep divinely with virtually no shoulder/neck pain.  I asked my mom about the mattress and she said it was a mattress topper to my surprise.

So, I came home and bought the same one with such happiness that I had finally found a solution to my aching shoulder/neck while sleeping. I tried two different kinds to compare. One had a far stronger chemical smell that never left even after I returned it and the other one had a mild smell, and notable, especially combined with the much stronger odor left behind and now permeating the new one.  Yes, I allowed some gas-off time, but that should of been a warning to my dot connecting brain, but I was inspired by the thought of good sleep.MEMORY_FOAM

I’ve noticed progressively my chest beginning to feel like there was a brick sitting atop and just chalked it up to colder weather, dust in the air behind my house (lots of dusty construction going on), a little shortness of breath and a little cough here and there and signs of asthma symptoms progressing.

Last night around 11 I took a breath in and had the rattle of a lifetime in my chest, center, lungs. This morning the rattle was back and gave me the feeling as if the rattling was blocking my ability to take a full breath. Was it scary enough to get my full attention? Yes!

So like anyone, I began to do some digging this morning. A lot of digging and here is the common theme of what I’ve found.

Per an article from Hannah Wallace, writer for Mother Jones, “The place where you spend one-third of your life is chock-full of synthetic materials, some potentially toxic. Since the mid- to late ’60s, most mattresses have been made of polyurethane foam, a petroleum-based material that emits volatile organic compounds that can cause respiratory problems and skin irritation. Formaldehyde, which is used to make one of the adhesives that hold mattresses together, has been linked to asthma, allergies, and lung, nose, and throat cancers. And then there are cotton pesticides and flame-retardant chemicals, which can cause cancer and nervous-system disorders. In 2005, Walter Bader, owner of the “green mattress” company Lifekind and author of the book Toxic Bedrooms, sent several mattresses to an Atlanta-based lab. A memory-foam model was found to emit 61 chemicals, including the carcinogens benzene and naphthalene.”

This article is from 2008 and is just one of the many I found during my early morning search. Peoples testimonials are ranging far back to current dates regarding their lung health, headaches, allergies, dizziness, nausea, memory loss and a whole host of others complaints, that were stated arrived only after they got their mattress topper or memory foam pillows.  Do the research yourself. I typed into Google the words, chemicals in mattress toppers and lung issues from mattress toppers.  As someone who researches and looks up information left and right for everyone in my life, (clients, family, friends, pets, strangers) it’s amazing I didn’t do my due diligence prior for this investment.  I was lulled in by the possibility of dreamy sleep with a full nights sleep, no pain, and a snuggly bed.

I’ll be sleeping in the guest bed until I can get this smell out of my room, my bedding (that may end up being a small investment too) clearly getting rid of this topper and it’s so toxic I cannot give it to anyone else in good conscience however, I will go back to the manufacturer and see If I can get my money back.

Much Love and Do Your Research!

Wild and Creamy Mushroom Soup

12029825_10206660199456275_815906289348169299_oSo tonight I made this and it was truly delicious!

Here’s how I did it!

  • 1/2 wild rice
  • 4 1/2 cups mushroom broth
  • 1 ounce dried wild northwest mushrooms
  • 2-3 teaspoons butter
  • coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup minced shallots
  • 1 toe garlic
  • 1 yellow onion
  • 1 large red potato
  • 8 cups sliced white mushrooms, (about 20 ounces)
  • 1 full tablespoon finely chopped fresh sage
  • kosher sea salt to taste
  • freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 2 – 4 ( depends how creamy you want it) tablespoons gluten free all-purpose flour
  • a tiny smidgeon sour cream on top
  • a few left over sage leaves chopped finely to put on top

PREPARATION

  1. Dutch Oven:  Made rice, onion, garlic, shallot confit type situation in 2 teaspoons butter and 1 of coconut oil.  Added a 1/4 cup mushroom broth once liquid began to dry.  Stirring along the way and often.  Slow simmer for about 30-35ish min.
  2. Put NW wild mushrooms in water for reconstituting and then place on paper towels after softened to soak up excess water. Reserve the soaking liquid
  3. Add white mushrooms and cook, stirring often, until they start to brown, 10-15 minutes. Add the Add the wild mushrooms, sage, salt and pepper and cook, stirring often, until beginning to soften.  Sprinkle flour over mixture and cook, stirring, until the flour is incorporated.  If you’re using Dry Sherry, add it now.  I did not.
  4. Add the wild mushroom reconstituted water and the remaining broth; heat to high and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the soup has thickened, 18 to 22 minutes.
  5. Pulse so mushrooms are broken up but not pureed.
  6. Put a small dollop of  sour cream in center or stir in until incorporated. Garnish with sage or chives or homemade croutons!

I use all organic ingredients and highly recommend eating this with a rustic bread and hearty red wine!

Bon Appetito!

Ever Take An Intermission From Your Life?

My Personal Intermission:   A Melting Pot of Introspect

I like to call where I’m at in life, this deep healing facilitator of sorts and questioning of life, an intermission as I put most of my active engaging life on hold  so I can revert inward and do some clean up on my innerverse.  I do reach out here and there when I need a little human contact so as to not go completely nuts.

a-julie-painted-sample-tree1

Every so often, I like to review who I am, specifically happening right now at this juncture in the illusional time constraints allotted.   I like to think of myself as a bird, living in my personal tree, and still being able to see the world around me as is, for what it is, while I tell myself I am safe to watch and observe human nature, the human condition and myself in the equation of all that exists.

Looking at where I have been, where I am now, where I could be headed, I’ve temporarily docked myself to liking the darker side of my thoughts about the world and have found them comforting and frightening all at the same time, as if I know the outcome already and am just reminding myself of what’s imminent. The other part of me is forever positive and peaceful with my naked feet walking this earth, knowing my spirit guides and ancestors walk with me, behind me and lead the way and moving forward with infinite cheer. There’s been such a duality of self and tearing away of layers and root digging and clutching and letting go and rebirthing and suffocating and release and more rebirthing and discovery and joyful connections and laughing and crying and talking to myself and talking with myself and talking with friends and listening to my little inner guide and talking with mother nature and walking with her supportive fertile ground, while she asks me to move forward with this awareness and extra care and extra love.

It’s been a busy and productive time with growth spurts of watching life unfold, refold anew and healing.  Sometimes this is observation of the lives around me and other times it’s solely my own existence. What is this healing?  This healing for me is about love.Love of self. Love of others. Love of existence no matter the outerverse conditions.  Loving this soul filled physical experience through whatever i’ve accumulated from the moment I signed up for this journey.  Loving all aspects of myself and letting them just be until I would like them to look differently.  Loving the whole entire road I’ve been on since forever to grow this souls evolution.  To question is this theory of souls evolution bullshit or are all the experiences I’ve had showing me the truth of the why’s?  The truth of the hows? The truth of all the what the fucks that cross my heart and mind.  I’ve allowed myself to be an absolute observer which sometimes brings up feelings of missing out or longing but I just let those feelings  go by and do not feel upset by them.  They are just passing, floating, they are brief and telling and temporary.

I feel like we have times in our lives when we are more participatory than observers and I feel confident that that aspect will reemerge, however, for now, I’m ok in the trenches of hibernation of observation.  I can manage a little darkness, a little depression while weeding out and going through the mud and muck of soul debris and collected other that is no longer useful, a little wondering of the whys and the shedding of self and yet still moving towards self improvement.  In some moments I am very uncomfortable here and in others too comfortable. I won’t live here though.  I most definitely feel it’s a necessary place to sit for a little while.  I’m on my way out, slowly.  I’m not in a rush. I’ve been here for quite sometime, perhaps a year or so. I get to know myself the best in this place and I allow myself to free myself from this space when I am ready.  I like the work.  I like dot connecting.  If souls growth is why we are here, i’d like to get the most meaningful and productive growth I can from this life.   I don’t know what my next moment or life will look like or if there is a next because even with all my spirit-filled experiences, I cannot say they would carry over to the next life or that the next life even exists or the next moment.  I only have this very moment. This literal moment of right now.

So, this intermission from the outwardly engaged participant, to be the observer for this melting pot of insight and introspect, is all good.  I feel a sense of gratitude to be afforded the awareness and opportunity to reflect with love in my heart, with a little a depression in tow for now, with everything that makes up this amazing school of life and really, what an amazing view.  Maybe you relate, maybe you don’t.  Maybe you’ve already been here and know you’ll be here again or won’t be here again. Perhaps there is no need to be such an observer, for if you want different and introspective behavior outwardly, letting go of what no longer is, and acting how you’d like to be presently really is the best way of just being.  Of course I wouldn’t of arrived here without taking my personal intermission, so for me, it’s a just a part of the ride.

Be Present. Be Kind. Be love.

xo Julie

Touch is A Language of Its Own

Touch begins the moment we are entering into this world. No matter where you live, no matter what your culture, your human condition has been wired for the nourishment of touch. I believe it’s part of the physical human experience. From the moment you are born, people are coddling you, swaddling you, changing your clothes, feeding you, snuggling you, passing you from person to person introducing you to touch. Most people crave some form of this very nurturing act, as it is built into our DNA for thriving.Happy Smiling Girl Hugging Her Mother's Leg With Love

This very important early introduction can however swing you either in favor of a healthy relationship with touch or an unhealthy relationship with touch. Your experience can greatly differ and affect your emotional wellbeing and balance, your cognitive and neurological development and/or responses while growing and throughout your life. I’m sure you’ve discovered for yourself on a variety of occasions through a series of lifetime scenarios which touches release the highest oxytocin, serotonin, endorphin and dopamine rushes (the feel goods – sex, hand holding, reiki, massage, a pat on the back, cuddling, dancing with a partner, hugs, etc.) and which touches release the almighty cortisol which indicates fight or flight and stress (the not so feel goods – receiving a shot, being in a physical altercation, hitting your funny bone which is never funny as it sounds, being hit or grabbed, etc.).  I am in favor of the good touches that make me smile from the inside out!

Think about how many times you’ve reached over to touch someone’s arm or leg when in a conversation, just as a point of connection. It’s a natural resource for the language of non-verbal communication. Study after study from Universities like Cornell and Berkeley and other Behavioral Science Departments have proven the wondrous and empowering benefits of touch.

Benefits of Positive Touch Include:

  • Promotes Healing
  • Pain Relief
  • Increased Energy
  • Oxytocin Release (Bonding Time!)
  • Lowers Blood Pressure
  • Lowers Stress Levels
  • Lowers Cortisol Levels
  • Positivity
  • Boosts Immune System
  • Better Communication
  • Vibrationally Lifting

Touch has the power to comfort a crying child, make the heart flutter with excitement of a woman in love, create energy, quell a man filled with sorrow, bring joy to the elderly, relax you, uplift you, save you and bring you back to life.

Touch is so magical to the spirit that people are opening cuddling centers for non-sexual human contact. The sheer power of being held makes us feel safe and comforted and loved when we may not have that otherwise in our lives, delivered to us in a manner that is pressure free where we can just be and be present without judgement or expectation.  What an amazing gift to give and receive. We are surrounded by so much electronic communication that people are starving for real-time touch, real-time connections.

lover holding hand walking on the beach

For myself personally, I am a huge fan of Reiki, Massage, Hand Holding, Hugging and all things Sensual as modalities for touch. Touch is timeless and ageless. You can never be too young or too old to benefit from the healthy and healing powers of this absolutely necessary component in life that is ancient, honest and healing.

Happy Touching!

Love Julie, XO

I was In Natures’ Dream…

As I sat outside today for nearly all my days work, Nature proved once again to be nothing short of pure nectar for my soul. Today I was part of natures’ dream.

I sat amongst the grass and bees and flies and bugs and butterflies that fluttered by and all that came to say hello. The littlest of bees hovered and said Buzzzzzo! As he received my message of gratitude for all his work in the world, and then flew away. The grass welcomed my bare feet and promised it would rise again and that I was to feel the support all the while, tickling my toes. I watched the blades sway from side to side in a carefree fashion like a child running free. My dog rolled in the grass and then sat quietly sniffing the air while feeling the breeze blow through his hair and flapping ears.

I enjoyed the symphony of Aspens waving in the wind brought forth by this powerful and very live planet, relaying music of quietly woven intricacies that change is here, on the surface and at the core. This magnitude of engaging all my senses created my acute awareness of what is not seen with the visible eye, only felt and known. Her magical force, her mood, was my reminder of sanctuary where I was dressed in white, barefoot and had an overwhelming sense of peace from a past life regression I had from many years ago. She used the push of her voice and her breezy ways to instill a gentleness that suited her personality, knowing she could wipe me out if she so desired. She ushered falling leaves, falling blossoms and my hair all in the directions that moved her.

The sunshine accompanied the wind, by kissing my skin with her warmth and a bright glow. She made sure my exoskeleton, the one that keeps my veins, bones, tissues and vital organs protected was receiving her light-baring offer. I drank this stars gift and thanked her for being present. She continued to shine for me and was happy to share her rays with me, my dog and my growing veggies while providing us with natural essentials we need to be healthy. Thank you for the Vitamin D3 I whispered. She shone like the star she is and said you are welcome Julie.

The illusion of this so called life, the feeling of knowing I am on this planet as a visitor of sorts, an observer and of course the participant, is an innerverse joy this afternoon to every fiber of my being. Nature is where my head clears, my heart connects and I remember exactly who I am and a sense of serenity washes over me. This amazing lesson filled visit won’t last forever and then onto another journey I will go, willingly or unwillingly, it shall be… In the meanwhile, I emerge myself into nature and thank her profusely for caring and thanking her for her mercy today.

In Gratitude,

Letting Go from 7,688 Miles Away…

ty and james in thailand

Ty and his best friend from 3rd grade. GAP Year Adventures!

As my son gets ready to board one of three flights to go from Koh Tao, Thailand to Bangkok and then from Bangkok to Melbourne and then from Melbourne to New Zealand, one learns to let go even while they are hanging on.

What does that mean exactly?  It means that I still want his flight information while knowing I have no choice but to trust life will carry him from point A to point B.  This is no easy feat for an ex-overworrier and someone who was raised to hold on tightly!

However, I have learned over this last year, that I have no control, no choice and that life is to be lived and loved and enjoyed and that worrying doesn’t actually stop anything from happening or un-happening as he still cracked his head open surfing, got food poisoning and was seriously dehydrated.  He’s survived every night drinking with this best buddy and all their new friends. He has traveled from Australia to Thailand and met great people. He has managed to keep himself fed and sheltered. He became a Certified Scuba Diver.  My son is capable and knows when he needs to reach out for a little help. He has grown into a completely new person that I will get to meet in 3 weeks.

Sigh… Even though the over-worrying has ended, the concerns remain.  As his Mom, as my brothers sister, as an aunt, as all my parents daughter, and to many a friend, I realize that no amount of talking, no amount of questions, no amount of anything  will  ever halt what is to be.  So grateful for my instincts, occasionally peppered with Mamabear WTF’s?, and OMG’s, and OH NO’s, and yet always the energetic connection and my heartfelt love for this kid transcends space and time. He knows. I know. We are connected.

Ahhh, the umbilical cord never really severs, it just stretches 7,688 Miles and beyond!

Two years ago, the Christmas sillies! Love this kid to the moon and back!

Signing out,

Forever a Mama,

A Moment in Time…

header-sunset-riverI stood there listening to the sound of my own voice whaling. It was an observation from a momentary out of body experience. The sounds of pain, sadness and loss were coursing through my being and out my mouth along with the expressing of my heaving surrendered frame.

This was my first moment of allowing myself to melt into a pile of much needed release. My father had died. He was gone from this earth in the physical form. No longer tangible, no sound I could readily hear. There would never be an opportunity to speak with him again via telephone, receive or send a card. There would be no visits. I would never feel his hugs and hear his encouraging words in real-time again.

I would need to make sure the imprinted vision of his face, his lines, his smile, his teeth, his voice, his smell, his hugs, his laugh, his humor, his knowledge, and his words, his creative and expanded thinking would stay etched at the forefront to be called upon when I needed it.

Blessed am I that he’s present in my dreams, my words, my thoughts, nature, funny moments, dot connecting on a spiritual journey, the pictures that hang on my wall, my cells, my DNA and memories. I am grateful to continue reopening my heart, a soft heart, a heart that has not shut down or is numb. I am not jaded by life.  I am more present and clear and compassionate and understanding and forgiving than ever.  This has been a process.

My father died almost 8 years ago and reliving that exact moment described above is still just as potent as the day it took place. It’s a precious memory of knowing I was so very alive.  His departure was a catalyst for some of the biggest and necessary changes in my life.

I have only cried in this surreal dream-like world one other time in my life thus far that was so very difficult to let go and that was when my son was leaving for an overseas GAP year.

So much LOVE to everyone who experiences loss of any kind. May you keep your heart open. Look around you for signs, synchronicity, and allow your support tribe to nourish you while you are in the deepest and darkest parts of the valley.

Cherish and be Cherished.

Are You Using It or Losing It?

As we age our brains really step into an accelerated “use it or lose it” functionality. It’s so nourishing to occupy yourself with topics that walk hand in hand with your passion in life and even more satiating when that action leads to the end result of whatever you are intending.

Given the opportunity for mental activity, our brains  produce new neurons throughout our lifetime and aside from lifestyle and toxicity, we get to “use it” vs. “lose it”. Yay! Neurons Illustration

We are constantly exposed to the toxins or habits that contribute to the “lose it” portion, but this is more of a celebration of how great it feels to”use it”!

With that said, there are 7 traditional styles of learning and each uses different areas of the brain. They are:

  • Visual (spatial):You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding.
    • At the back of the brain, the occipital and parietal lobes manage spatial orientation.
  • Aural (auditory-musical): You prefer using sound and music.
    • The temporal lobes handle aural content. The right temporal lobe is especially important for music.
  • Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing.
    • The temporal and frontal lobes have two specialized areas in the left hemisphere
  • Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch.
    • The cerebellum and the motor cortex (at the back of the frontal lobe) handle much of our physical movement.
  • Logical (mathematical): You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems.
    • The parietal lobes, especially the left side, drive our logical thinking.
  • Social (interpersonal): You prefer to learn in groups or with other people.
    • The frontal and temporal lobes handle much of our social activities. The limbic system (not shown apart from the hippocampus) also influences both the social and solitary styles. The limbic system has a lot to do with emotions, moods and aggression.
  • Solitary (intrapersonal): You prefer to work alone and use self-study.
    • The frontal and parietal lobes, and the limbic system, are also active with this style.

hand drawn pixel brain as conceptAs my contribution to my using it portion, before I lose it, I have chosen to engage my brain in the focused act of learning, revisiting and adding to my current knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology to further my education and business. This has truly sparked a ripple of remembering why connecting the dots to information I already knew or was exposed to previously is such a different experience and pleasure more so at this age, although time consuming and thought-provoking.  The benefits of choosing to take on any brainy neuron producing activities can only make you feel good, boost your knowledge, boost your confidence and bring about a general sense of purpose and functionality.  Pretty Awesome!

This is baring its bones of reaffirming just how much I truly enjoy working with people and feel excited over the possibilities that assist them to connect the dots in their lives in a way that makes sense to them while incorporating my understanding and knowledge of Energy Work, Visual Diagnosis, Dream Analysis, Psychology, Holistic Health and Intuitive Practices.

So grateful to have the freedom of choice to stimulate my brain, improve my memory and peak my interest for what is an innate gift and desire in my life.  Clearly this is just a tiny snippet of Neuron life, but interesting nonetheless!

I’ll leave you with this thought by Dr. Merzenich, Professor Emeritus at the University of California:

Use It or Lose It –

“It’s simple in concept. The brain changes physically, functionally, and chemically, as you acquire an ability or as you improve an ability. You know this instinctively. Something must be changing as your brain advances, as it progresses.

Actually what it is doing is changing the local wiring, changing the details of how it’s connected. It’s also changing itself in other ways, physically, functionally, and those changes account for that improvement, or account for the acquisition of an ability.

You don’t realize it but as you acquire an ability – let’s say, the ability to read – you actually create a system in the brain that does not exist, or that’s not in place, in the non-reader. It [the ability] actually evolves in the brain.”

Use or Lose it! YOU choose how, when, what, where and be open to why the opportunities appear because the likelihood that they showed in the first place was a gift! Pay attention!

Cheers to Celebration of the Brain and New Neurons!

Julie

Nature Offers Nurture… Are You Accepting Her Gifts?

Nature is by far thee best medicine I personally have found! There really is no substitute for speaking your souls desires to the earth, to the water, to the air, to the wind, to the ether and to the field of pure energetics.   trees shevlin 2015 trees shevlin natural wood 2 2015

If you sit quietly in nature and allow yourself to become a part of your scenery, absolute magic and sense of it all come together. Everything outside of that moment is not so important.  Life’s petty little irritations, life’s seemingly rapid pace slows to a rhythmic breath of order.   Put your ear to earth. Become the earth. The earth is beating.  Let your feet feel the soil and toes play with each microscopic grain.  Welcome the sound of birds singing and communicating so naturally in their oxygenated playground amongst the trees.  Allow the breeze to move right through you and bring the scent of remembering.  Feel your heart open and be embraced with a warm smile from your spirit.  Welcome the negative ions from a waterfall to induce positive feelings in your 4 bodies. Mother Nature is truly a spiritual and clearing gift available to all.

trees shevlin animal fairy 2015  trees shevlin water sun 2015

All of the shapes, colors, forms hold a fluidity and flow and serenity and become formless, they become an integrated piece of what you are, energy. It’s one of the most amazingly beautiful and graceful and powerful treasures we can be transcended by, like Love. It’s perceived differently by many and yet the consensus seems to always be the same.  Simple consciousness, beauty and awakening visions bring peace and invoke a meditative effect allowing us to feel happier, calmer and more heart-full in our daily lives.

May you journey into the “inner-verse” so you may be reminded you are the “uni-verse” after all…

Love Julie, XO

LOVING A WOMAN WHO KNOWS HOW TO BE LOVED…

I keep seeing these articles that talk about loving a girl, a woman, who doesn’t know how to be loved.  Right away a feeling of “savior” mentality washes over.  Well FUCK THAT!

What if you loved a woman who DOES know how to be loved?  What if she knows how to love you? What if you changed you’re whole entire pattern of choice by choosing the one who scares the shit out of you because they would stay? Because they will receive your love? What if, What if you were appreciated not on your savior skills but for who you genuinely are?

First off, women who know how to love, and be loved, are out there! Knowing how to receive love is so important because when you receive your partners love, you are telling them, I trust you. I trust us.

A woman who knows how to love and be loved, knows the importance of communication and that sometimes communication mishaps happen. It’s not something to freak out over, it’s something to allow you the opportunity to hear one another the way the other needs to be heard in addition to getting to know your partners sensitivities so you may work together instead of against one another. Communication mishaps teach you about yourself.

A women who knows how to love and to be loved understands that there are peaks and valleys and relationships grow in spurts and sometimes slowly and no matter this will require nurturing.  This doesn’t mean she is perfect or will always say the right thing, or that she won’t have her moments, or feel sad, blah, blah, blah.  What this means is that she believes in you and she knows your heart and adores you and there’s no one else she’d rather spend her time with at the end of her day.

A woman who knows how to love and be loved, will speak clearly on her behalf. She won’t speak belittling to you and she will do her best to use tenderness and direct words to let you know what she needs. She will fight for the two of you. She views she, as a we.  She will appreciate when you forgive her and read between the lines from time to time and that only makes her love you more.

A woman who knows how to love and be loved will want to love you how you need to be loved.  She will learn if she doesn’t quite have it down. She will hear you and do her best to give you exactly what you need. This can be very scary for some men because that means all the old bullshit habits of defending yourself, of being heard, being right, being validated and appreciated just may be fulfilled. This tends to create a feeling of resistance because it’s too good to be true and perhaps they’ve been conditioned to be in fight mode vs. delight mode. Sometimes this can feel boring at first, but the truth is, this is the person that will stick by you in the fox hole.

A woman who knows how to love and be loved is whole without you, but loves her life and herself with you. She wants to make the nest cozy for the two of you, not just for her. She knows you add something magical and deeply meaningful to her life and would never undervalue your amazing gifts as they are a part of her soul.

A woman who knows how to be loved and to love, knows that when shit gets a little thick, she’s not going to threaten leaving, she not going to bolt at the first signs of clashing and she knows the value of working through a relationship when there is love, deep down to the core everlasting, love. She will forgive, not hold grudges and move forward so you may do the same.  So don’t be nervous by a little feist and fire from the belly for that is what keeps things real, passionate and strong like the root of a tree spiraling down into the earth to be seeded.

A woman who knows how to love and be loved will be strong for her and strong for you when life gets tough or you are down. She will support you, encourage you, be real with you and never withhold her love because she knows that is part of the steady foundation for building continuous trust between the two of you. She will never allow you to feel like you’re standing alone. She may let you figure you out things for yourself, but you will never be abandoned because it’s too much for her.

A woman who knows how to love and be loved, receives who you are, and lets’ you be that person, because she believes in the two of you and believes in you. She knows how she feels being loved by you and that this doesn’t always come easy for you but that you are her rock, you are her support, you are her sounding board, you are her strength as well, you are her fun, you are her passion, you are a part of each other. It just is…  She is a warrior of love, she is a defender, she is a gatherer, she is a pillar of strength, she holds the womb of comfort and sacredness just for you.  She is love and will be loved.  She will go down into the depths of muddy painful waters with you and rise to the top holding your hand.

So really, fuck these titled articles of how to love a girl who doesn’t know how to be loved. I know how to be loved and I know how to love. It’s time we stop labeling men and women like they are broken. We are healing, healers, feeling, feelers and require patience. We are not broken.  We just are…  Let’s love our men. Let’s love our women. Let’s love one another because it’s the most potent and magical feeling there is.

February 2015 and A Vegetarian Kitchen Kind of Love!

Love shows up in all different ways, so if you’re like me you love cooking and playing with recipes and sometimes following them exactly!  Some recipes turn out divine and others ,well, not so much. Ha!  That’s OK I’ve accepted that I may not be the worlds best chef. No biggie! However, the recipes in this cookbook The Vegetarian Kitchen, by Melissa Bushby, have been really delicious and have taught me a few things, like making crusts, infusing a few flavors I didn’t think would taste good together and yet they did, and there is just a great variety for the palette.

I’ve been vegan, vegetarian, not vegan, not vegetarian, back to vegetarian off and on over the last 4 years and now I just eat as my body requests.  There is about 95% no animal meats in my diet, but cheeeeeese is good in small quantities! This saves me a lot of hassle of being forced by some silly rule I made up myself as to how I am going to eat and what I’d be committed to.  So, if you eat meat, add meat.  If you don’t, don’t.  If you eat cheese, add cheese. If you don’t eat cheese, use something like Daiya Cheese, which is very tasty too in these recipes!

Anyways, some of my favorite recipes include Tomato & Onions (it has a great caper topping), Mung Bean Soup, Roasted Onions, Sweet Potato & Courgette (Zucchini) Fritters, Tarts, Pastas, Homemade Hot Chocolate, Homemade Lemonade, and there are even recipes for Limoncello, Ginger Beer and Sangria.   Don’t forget, cook once, eat twice or thrice!  This book, yes the one below, has been a true find!

Bon Appetit!

January’s Favorite Book! 2015 Mindfulness Begins Now!

January’s favorite is here! This book is a must read for 2015! Peace Is Every Step, The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life by Thich Nhat Hanh.

This book speaks the language of simplistic awareness and allows for several opportunities to practice mindfulness in everyday life and situations.

Thich Nhat Hanh is 89 years old and has some serious wisdom that he has gained throughout his life.  He was born in Vietnam and left when he was a teenager to become a Zen Monk.  His life is filled with meaningful accomplishments and has been so very generous with his teachings through his (over 75) books, talks and founded the Van Hanh Buddhist University as well as teaching at Columbia University.  These are only a few of the places he has impacted his followers and the people who wish to become more mindful in their lives.

The foreward of this book is by his Holiness the Dalai Lama and right away you feel inspired and calm and ready to bring awareness to the forefront of your life.  This book is a huge recommend!

Apparently I’m a Survivor and a Thriver! Awesome!

Well, if there is one thing I’ve learned over this holiday season, is that I really do like myself regardless of what I do and don’t have.  I spent a lot of time with myself, crying at first for the 24 hrs before Christmas day itself, then realizing I hold the key to leaving my house, on my own, without shame, on Christmas day. This was afterall my first holiday ever in my entire life without my son, without family, without friends, without a place to celebrate in a community and a space at the dinner table with my name on it.

img_3594-704x454The Light Bulb Moment of  Who gives a fuck that I’m alone, family is in the Valley, son is abroad, friends and neighbors are gone doing their thing, I deserve to have the best day I can, was so freeing. No pressure. It turned out to be a wonder-ful day of talking to a few new faces, seeing movies, walking my dog and enjoying a warm coffee on a beautiful blue skied, brisk day in the PNW!

What hit me was that I was surrounded by love in a variety of ways.  I spoke to family & friends, exchanged silly snapchat videos, I facebooked several others, the sunshine kissed my face and the trees all high fived me as I walked by them.   That morning as I took a shower, I said outloud to the universe, “today, (Christmas) I invite only goodness, only energy that supports me and allows me to smile from the inside out”.    Sure enough, that is exactly how my day presented itself to me.   I felt warm, loved and grateful to have a car that works,  money for the movies,  food in my fridge and my belly, my loved ones are safe and healthy, my dog is a cute snugglebunny who needs a breathmint and the freedom to do what I want with my time.  My life is good.

This was definitely a necessary and good experience as to what I really value, what I really want in my life and how I’ve always been a survivor and thriver!

I hope your days are filled with the many blessings life has to offer and may you always be present for the sunrise and sunset in your own life!

Love Julie, xo

My Favorite Nutrient Dense Superfood!

If there is one thing I am always trying to get into my body, it’s GREENS!   Sometimes I need a boost and a little help from one of my favorite smoothie enhancers, Greens + Advanced Multi Raw Superfood Supplement.  The reason I was drawn to this particular brand was because it was gluten free.  However, when I began to read the ingredients and realized that these Greens would be such an essential vitamin, mineral and antioxidant mix, I knew this is what my body needed.

The other feature I really liked was that they used infrared activation so as to preserve the heat sensitive phytonutrients in the greens and maintains the quality of the superfoods!  This means that what naturally occurs in your greens to give you nutrients in the raw form, is retained even through their processing.

The more alkaline your diet, the better your heart, your brain and your body will be. If each system is in working order and clear of toxins, each system can function at their optimum best and keep your lymph system moving, your digestive system moving and keep your blood oxygenated for transporting and delivering the vitamins and minerals your gut and body need as part of a healthy life.

I’m also sold on this product because it provides me with incredible energy that I really appreciate in the mornings.  I don’t drink coffee so I consider this my “juice” that sustains me through my day.

Superfood, another way to add greens!

Advanced Multi Raw Superfood Greens+ (Orange Peel Enterprises) 9.4 oz. Powder ~ One container is worth a try for gained immunity, essential vitamins and minerals, energy, digestive support, detox properties, keeping your pH alkaline, building your bones and reducing stress. Clearly I like this product! Hope you will too! Take care of YOU because you’re the only YOU the world is blessed enough to have.

Never Be Afraid To Stand Up for Yourself!

Never be afraid to stand up for yourself!  You know when someone insults your soul because it hurts in a way that makes you doubt yourself and goes against what you know to be true to your core, to your life energy.  You are worth a relationship that feeds your soul, supports your dreams and thoughts, and is kind to your standards from their heart to your heart, not just their idea of what a relationship is…

You are your best advocate. If you feel like you’ve been insulted, odds are, you have.  If you feel like you’re being belittled, odds are, you are.

Common symptoms of being controlled and manipulated:

  • If you find yourself dropping friends and taking on his/her friends
  • If you find you’ve changed your clothing, shoes and certain physical aspects of yourself for his/her appeasement
  • If you pass off his/her passive aggressive behaviors as “oh that’s just part of who he/she is”
  • If you find yourself making excuses for his/her insensitivity towards your feelings over anything
  • If you find yourself thinking about the nice things he/she does for you as a compensation for the shitty things he/she says or does
  • If he/she buys items for you that may be more appropriate for his/her comfort level, not yours  (i.e) certain types of shoes, clothes, music selections, etc.)
  • If you have tell yourself “oh they are just a wounded little child on the inside, I understand”. Well, we’re all little children on the inside and that is no excuse for abusing your kind heart
  • If you’re on his/her time frame.  Your events in life are of non-importance and any inconvenience you have is ridiculous on your part – NOT!
  • If his/her family doesn’t really like your partner.  There could be a reason why. Not always, but listen to what they are saying
  • If you are not allowed to have friends of the same sex due to the others insecurities (this includes your job, workout environment, school functions, etc)
  • If you are bullied out of your beliefs through belittling and zero compassion from where you came or even the kindness to listen with a full compassionate heart
  • If your partner uses phrases like “do it for me”, “women/men your age don’t…fill in the blank of whatever applies”, “if you loved me, you’d…” “That’s not normal” and other fun phrases that make you believe you’re the one who needs to change.
  • If your partner cannot apologize because they really believe no matter what they say or do, they don’t owe you any recognition of your feelings
  • If you feel relaxed in your time alone and he/she just wants to know why you need time to yourself
  • If he/she implements double standards like it’s OK for them to go away with their friends but not you, because men/women may be predators to you
  • If your partner tries to control circumstances for their convenience and steam rolls over anyone in the process, that’s a NO Bueno!

Nothing can trump compassion and  understanding from you partner in a relationship, however, if their means of communication is really a source of control and passive aggressive banter, how loving is that really?

It’s hard to admit that we all make poor choices in mates sometimes.  Be your own best friend and advocate of self. YOURSELF!

I have been there and it just rubs me the wrong way to see it happen to someone else. Especially when he/she has children as well. One can only hide their true nature for so long and then like a balloon that pops, you realize you’ve been manipulated out of things you believe, who you are, what you want, torn down and built back up to someone elses’ model of you.

Do what feels right to you, to your heart, to your soul, to your gut.  Ignoring the little voice on the inside doesn’t make anothers violating behavior dissipate, it only feeds your little voice a louder tone that can eventually burst into dis-ease, dis-comfort and dis-cord with one’s true happy self.

OBEY THE LITTLE VOICE!

A Few of My Favorite Immune Boosters

For starters,  I am a believer in the medicinal properties of fungi, veggies, bones, ferments, garlic and herbs! Here a few of my favorite immune boosters!

Everything I use is Organic or it will not be consumed for if the goal is health, why eat pesticides or GMO’s? If you are on a budget and don’t grow your own food, there are a lot of ways to get a better bang for your buck by using organic frozen veggies or making casseroles, large pots of soups and meals that you can freeze and reheat down the road.

I’m just a Fungi! I often use reconstituted mushrooms as a soup base and I always use the reconstituted water.  I’ve not had a flu in over 7 years (knock on wood or our woodland friends shall I say!) and I really believe that this is just one of the reasons why. My favorite mushrooms to play with in the kitchen are Organic Maitake, Shiitake, Cremini, White Button, Oyster, Reishi and an immune supplement that is made up of about 17 different kinds of mushroom extract as well. Mushrooms are nutrient rockstars that can relieve stress, provide relief from fatigue, build your immunity amongst a whole host of other benefits.  I used to get my mushrooms from a wonderful woman in Portland who forged and sold them to me each year from the farmers market.  Next on my list, is forging them myself and don’t worry that will be a blog too!

Veggies! I use seasonal veggies to fill up my soups.  In the Fall and Winter time I use lots of vegetables like carrots, parsnips, potatoes (red, yukon, sweet, purple), swiss chard, kale, celery, onion, winter squash, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, fennel and actually I use beans as well, not a veggie I know, but needed to be noted.  These all have properties that are made for healing.  For example, once you cut open an onion, you activate an anti-cancer agent that is working on your behalf.  When you feel ungrounded, eating grounding foods like root veggies (carrots, turnips, parsnips, etc.) can help your root Chakra reconnect for a more solid and secure feeling. Maybe that’s why I am so drawn to them.  I am a little bit of a celestial being!

Bones Bones Bones! It’s funny that as someone who only eats animal products maybe 2x a year, I will incorporate bones into my soups when I make them for my son.  The old Jewish tale of Chicken Bone Broth is spot on! Bones hold the marrow, they hold the energy, and they hold the nutrients that your body may just be desiring to keep a healthy immune system. Bone broth is good for your joints as it contains glucosamine and chondroitin  which most people seek from a capsule.  My biggest reason would be the fact that bone broth is known to heal leaky gut. Basically leaky gut is when undigested food particles end up in your bloodstream.  Doesn’t that sound like a disaster?  Its is!  Bone broth is also known to make your hair and nails super health and pretty.  Anything that makes you pretty, heals your gut and lubes your joints, is really A-OK with me!

Fermentation Definition: an enzymatically controlled anaerobic breakdown of an energy-rich compound (as a carbohydrate to carbon dioxide and alcohol or to an organic acid); broadly :  an enzymatically controlled transformation of an organic compound. Say What? Basically, it means foods like cabbage sit until they become bacteria boosting powerhouse agents. Ferments are  an immune system &  natural gut flora restorer.  They are a natural pro-biotic and can be a guts best friend.  Some of my favorites are Sauerkraut (which I can only have a tiny bit as I have a sulfite allergy and these naturally contain sulfites!  Bummer, I know!) Kombucha, which I’ve only just been able to drink again about once a week but I love it! (Sulfites again) Pickled Dilly Beans are another favorite and they do not stand a chance in this house for more than a day.  Kefir is so good for you and yet, it’s one that I have yet to adore. Someday perhaps.  Two of my trusted go to resources for gut health information are Donna Gates and Summer Bock.

Garlic and Herbs: Yes, Garlic is the new Peaches.  So garlic also contains naturally occurring sulfites, so I tread lightly in frequency, but not in amount.  Garlic is such a potent natural antibiotic for the body and has been used throughout time for health purposes, not just to scare off vampires.  Garlic is wonderful for the lungs, chest colds and the immune system. Garlic is great for heart health and removing plaque.  Garlic is also the thyroids friend as it contains iodine which is much required by the body to thrive. Now when you mix Garlic with Herbs like Thyme, Rosemary, Sage, Tarragon, Basil, Oregano or whatever your favorites are, you can mix them in a bowl with olive oil and create your own drizzle for a spaghetti noodle delight, or you may drizzle a top of tomatoes or cucumbers.  Fresh herbs like Thyme and the others mentioned are great as whole sprigs in soups that simmering and other dishes that you’d like to pop with flavor and ignite .  Oregano is another of my favorites for immune building whether it’s taken from an oil, fresh or dried.  Do not forget about parsley and cilantro as metal attractors, turmeric for arthritis inflammation, basil oil to rub on adrenals for adrenal fatigue, ginger for strong immunity – also a natural blood thinner, rosemary to contradict the effects of carcinogens  and there’s just too many to tell.

AND… there you have a few of my favorites!

*If you are on pharmaceutical medications or are treating a condition, it’s always wise to check with your Dr., Naturopath or Holistic Practitioner to make sure that what you’re ingesting is not in conflict with any herbs, spices, foods or drinks you are consuming in high doses or accumulative.  We are at a delicate time with food allergies running rampant, people on large amounts of medications and there can be serious side effects.

Little Bird, Little Bird, Where Did The Time Go? An Empty Nesters first..

As holidays approach and what used to be standard is no longer, I am acutely aware that my son is out in this world, living a dream and exploring an opportunity he manifested into reality.  This is what we want for our children and we know the process is going to carry many emotions and we let  go and hold on in only a way that we can.

Normally, I would be decorating the house for the Fall season and Halloween, however I chose this year to leave behind the hype and colorful pieces of celebration.  Why?  The only conclusion I’ve come up with is that I feel like I have outgrown this particular feeling of needing and wanting this for myself.  Part of the joy was the collaboration of parties and decor with festive neighbors who had kids and we were all taking a part in the community hallows eve of doing it for the kids and it made us happy to see them happy, but mostly for me, it was the pure comfort of knowing my son quietly appreciated the fun end result of having a home filled with warmth.

So, with a nostalgic twinkle in my eyes and holding space in my heart, I watch other parents with their little ones, I watch them laughing,  I watch them taking part in these rituals that are really silly conceptually overall (whole different blog!), I watch them form their traditions that help weave the fabric of family that I once had the pleasure of creating as well.

There are a few other little birds  (my nieces & step daughters) my son and I used to celebrate these moments with as well.  These memories are embedded in my heart. Funniest part is, I am only at Halloween in my nostalgia! There is still Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years left!

As the year continues on, my heartspace grows to epic proportions of love and gratitude and I make my way by seeing the joy in others, creating some new traditions this year,  knowing that I am so blessed and have great new neighbors, great friends near and far, activities to keep me busy, time for creations that are being birthed and born in my business life, volunteering opportunities and family that I will see when they come to visit. I find peace knowing that my son is safe, sound and enjoying his creation of memories and making new friends.

This is just a snippet into my open heart of an empty nesters first season without her kiddo.  Remember time flies and so do our little birds. Enjoy Every Moment,

Love Julie xo

(PS) Doggy Love Moment:  My dog is like a 24 hour toddler so I always have him to love on and luckily for me, he accepts every pet, every kiss, every hug!

Here’s The Thing…

Based on a true conversation tonight. I received permission to relay the context of this story as it’s not really my story to tell, but there is such value here.

A friend called me and she was struggling after having these words said to her “here’s the thing” and it left her unsettled. Words are powerful and trigger so much in us at a core level.  W.O.R.D.S can trigger the obvious and hidden hurts of feelings we have yet to resolve or feelings we don’t want to associate with ourselves any longer.

My take, when emotions turn to rationalizing and rationalizing turns into excuses, excuses bottom out with a quick truth ending dialogue sometimes concluding with “here’s the thing”.

What exactly does that imply? Is that the bottom line? Yes, most often.  Is that the moment we acquiesce to our feelings? Yes, we are done investing energy.

I believe it sums up the way we choose to convey a truth. A truth that we no longer care to address or indulge in.  It’s a moving on statement.  “Here’s the thing” really is a point of disconnect, an I’m at my limit and no amount of talking, no amount of discussion, pleading, begging, crying or negotiating is going to change the situation of what is.

If someone uses this phrase on you or vice verse, remember, a simple kindness is to use a tone of understanding and empathy towards the person who is on the receiving end. It’s OK to stand your ground but there is no need to dismiss or diminish another persons feelings while you are in the throws of trying to escape. Sincerity and a firm position in your desire to exit is a wonderful way of being clear and being true to your cause. If you add in a little compassion, I believe Karma will be on your side.  Not everything in life is meant to be, how we handle it though builds character and valuable lessons.

I learn from my friends always and feel blessed that my friend was trusting enough to share this with me and then to let me share this with you.  Such important reminders as to how much power words can carry when we attach feelings to the words we internalize.

Is this Mercury Retrograde Sitution Kicking Your Ass? Mine Too…

I am not normally this effected by the retrogrades however, this one, I call the Mother (fucker) of Retrogrades.  I am usually a positive person, looking at all the goodness, possibilities and opportunities for growing and this round of retrograde is proving to be a true push of purging old patterns, thoughts and beliefs.

I am OK with change as that is part of the ever evolving flow of life but some changes are more pertinent and potent than others and those are the ones that sting and push you in the direction you should be going. As we know, if you don’t know make decisions in your life, life makes decisions for you.  Good Stuff, eh?!

So, here is my take care plan until this all smooths over or at least the intensity mellows out.  If you’re getting your ass kicked around a little too, maybe these self care suggestions will help you!

  • I’m eating warm foods to feed the comfort I am desiring.  For example so far over the last week approximately, I’ve made Potato Leek Soup. Butternut Squash soup and a Veggie Stew.  I bought some Gluten Free Bread from Great Harvest and made a few slices into croutons for my soups.  Yum!
  • I’m talking with friends who are empathetic, positive and sometimes have more intense retrograde poo occurring than me.  You see sometimes it helps to remove the focus from yourself and reach out to others who are struggling.
  • Not everyone has to do this, however I did create an association of feeling like I was doing something good for my spirit and so with that said, I bought myself a new local companies organic face moisturizer and then went to Victoria’s Secret and bought myself a little something cozy and sexy.
  • I swapped out my cool summer like sheets for my warm flannel sheets, washed my comforter and made my bed, which I don’t usually bother doing.
  • Everywhere I go, I talk to strangers (just friends we haven’t met yet) and ask them how they are doing.  Surprisingly the bulk seem to share their stories which is such a beautiful instant relatability factor affirming that we really are all humans together in this retrograde festival of changes.
  • I’m allowing myself  to feel every emotion and go through the motions and then when I’ve had enough, I let them go.  Sometimes they come back (some are super persistent) so I look at them a little closer and then I release them again.  I do not beat myself up for any feelings, tears, joys, etc., I embrace them and thank them for showing up and providing clarity as to how I authentically feel.
  • I walk almost everyday or get in some form of movement.  For instance if no walk, perhaps yoga (at home so far) or I confront the kickbag in my garage, etc.
  • Lastly, I go back to being grateful for this life, for these opportunities to be clear in my growth and wants and needs. I celebrate the soliloquy of conversations between my head and my heart and reality.  I know this retrograde will not last forever and my health is good, my family and friends are good and eventually life will balance back out, bringing with it the changes that have incurred and eventually becoming manageable, for change is just a different path or direction and with the right outlook, is always doable.

So here’s to the next few days of the rest of the retrograde, cheers to the 23rd when the NEW MOON is here and I reset my intentions with love, positivity, a little magic and a peaceful center.

Love Julie, xo

Let’s Talk About Gluten Baby, Let’s Talk About You & Me..

Is Gluten affecting your body, your skin, your life?  It’s affected mine.

Where do I begin you ask?  Begin by asking yourself, “How Do I Feel?”  bloated, fatigued, stomach pain, depression, muscle cramps, joint pain, irritability or perhaps a general “off” feeling?   True Celiac disease can be life threatening if left untreated.  Celiac can also starve your body of the nutrients you are taking in from a lack of absorption,  leaving you to lose weight (not always a good thing), weak, exhausted and could cause foul smelling oily or fatty greyish stools.

Next, take a look at your family history and start asking your family members if they have ever been tested for any Gluten issues. Also, keep in mind, if they don’t have an issue, you may still develop Gluten Intolerance/Sensitivity.

Next, take your health into your hands and get tested if you suffer from any of the following:

  • Autoimmune Disease – this covers a wide variety: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, etc..
  • Osteoporosis
  • Chronic Intestinal Problems
  • IBS
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Diabetes
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Chronic Anemia
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Migraine Headaches
  • Hypothyroid – Low thyroid
  • ADD or ADHD
  • Restless Legs Syndrome
  • Autism

This is not even a complete list…

What can you do if you think you might have a gluten issue?  Get tested!

How do they test for Celiac?

  • A series of blood tests
  • Endoscopy and Intestinal Biopsy
  • Some people have a skin rash called Dermatitis Herpetiformis which is indicative of Celiac

How do they test for Intolerance/Sensitivity?

  • Saliva Tube test – that worked for me!
  • Cheek Swabbing
  • Elimination Diet

Symptoms can show as, but not limited to: bloating, pain or discomfort in the abdomen, fatigue, lethargic after a meal, and diarrhea. These are just a few of the common symptoms.

What foods contain gluten?  Some of the Foods that contain Gluten are:

Wheat, Barley, Rye, Couscous, Semolina, Pastas, Bagels, Pastries, Crackers, Flour, Cookies, Oatmeal, Pancakes, Bread Crumbs, Croutons, Pizza, Tortillas, etc… The list goes on and on.  Take the time to know what you’re eating.  Gluten hides in many foods.

YOU CAN LIVE A HAPPY &  HEALTHY LIFE WITH  CELIAC OR A GLUTEN INTOLERANCE!

As always, just because you exhibit any symptom or dis-ease does not automatically make you Gluten Intolerant or give you a case of Celiac.  Get the facts before you react and remember to listen to your body!   Having the correct diagnosis and information helps you live fully and allows you to create meals and a health plan that works to alleviate your discomfort and allows your body to thrive!

Are You An Antacid Junkie?

Do you feel bothered by a painful feeling from the burning sensation in your esophagus and/or stomach from acid indigestion and often pop an antacid to give yourself relief?

Whether it’s a chew or a pill, over the counter or prescription, you are creating a pattern of suppressing the acids that your body needs for healthy digestion.  Chronic users are constantly on the merry go round, knowing they are going to eat, experience acid indigestion and take an antacid.  Many people take them several times a day, exceeding the “recommended dosage” and thinking these are harmless.

Well, they are not harmless.  Quite often, you don’t have an overproduction of acid, you have an underproduction of stomach acids, which essentially causes starvation in your body as the nutrients, enzymes, vitamins etc. that are necessary to keep your gut healthy and digesting properly, cannot do their job because they are halted to a STOP by an ANT-ACID!

The word Antacid translates –  Antiagainst, opposite of.  When referring to your stomach acids it’s saying against acids.

Some symptoms of low stomach acids: burning immediately after eating; burping, bloating, feeling full after a small quantity of food, peeling fingernails, hair loss, gas in the upper abdomen.  Low stomach acid has been associated with eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, weak adrenals, rosacea, chronic hepatitis and thyroid issues and more.

If you are chronic, get tested for low stomach acid (HYPOCHLORHYDRIA) and don’t forget “Be Your Own Doctor”.  Ask questions, investigate and take control of your health!

To find out more, check out a book called “Why Stomach Acid is Good for You” by Johnathan V. Wright M.D and Lane Lenard, Ph.D.  You just may be surprised you are not suffering from acid reflux, acid indigestion and heartburn after all.
